How Chiropractors Can Help Relieve Herniated Discs

When you struggle with back pain, it can be devastating. Back pain can limit mobility and prevent you from performing daily tasks. Many people have found relief from back pain through chiropractic care. Spinal Misalignment and Adjustment

We believe that much of the body's pain can be traced to a misalignment of the spine. The spine has 33 bones, called vertebrae, which are arranged around the spinal cord. The nerves of the spinal cord protrude through the vertebrae and initiate the movement of the arms and legs. When one or more vertebrae slip out of place, it causes back pain as well as limited mobility.

During a routine examination, our chiropractor will determine the location of your misalignment. They will perform a chiropractic adjustment to relieve your pain by placing their hands near the site of the pain. Adjustments are done by applying pressure inward and forward to encourage the vertebra to return to its proper alignment. For example, if spinal misalignment occurs near the sciatic nerve (causing sciatica), they would place their hands on the lower back, over the location of the sciatic nerve.

Relief from Herniated Discs

In addition to the spinal nerves, there are spinal discs between each of the vertebrae. These discs act as cushions for the spinal bones. If one of the discs protrudes through the vertebrae, it causes a condition known as a "slipped disc" or herniated disc. This condition exacerbates your back pain and immobility. Our chiropractor may use a treatment called spinal decompression to relieve your herniated discs. This treatment involves the client lying on a special therapeutic table, which allows the back to be flexed into various positions. When the back is flexed, gravity helps the discs return to their proper alignment.
